The State of New Jersey had proposed setting 5 parts per billion as the Maximum Contaminant Level for perchlorate in drinking water. The proposed reporting limit was 3 ppb. This NJDEP perchlorate proposal was published in the March 16, 2009 New Jersey Register.
In March 2010 the NJDEP Commissioner Bob
Martin decided not to promulgate the proposed perchlorate regulations.
In May
2010 Commissioner Martin stated “I have
committed to base final DEP decisions on a thorough review of all available
science... So it is very important that
our facts are accurate and we are transparent when having a public dialogue on
any issue.”
At this time the NJDEP and the USEPA are reviewing perchlorate issues.
The perchlorate MCL was to be applicable to both public and private water systems. Testing was to be required for public water systems and in the Private Well Testing Act.
Garden State Laboratories, Inc. is one of
the few labs in New Jersey certified by the NJDEP for perchlorate analysis. We
are certified for USEPA Method 314.0 and our reporting limit is 2 ppb.
To help you stay on top of drinking
water regulations, Garden State Labs has set up a Twitter account, WaterTests for rapidly distributing information about perchlorate and other
water regulations. There is no charge
for following the WaterTests twitter account. If you do not have a
Twitter account you can set one up at no charge. As we get perchlorate
info we will tweet it with appropriate links.
